Don Pike

The Wave

On the border of Arizona and Utah is one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet.
This rare geological wonder, created during the Jurassic period, about 190 million years ago, by the erosion of Navajo sandstones through the action of strong winds and water forces.
Although not far from the Wire Pass Trailhead, this gem of American nature is not easy to find. To minimize the disturbance of the natural environment, there are no signposts or trails to the site. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, there are maps with noted land features to guide hikers to the site however most visitors use a GPS to reach this location.
Due to the sensitivity of the terrain, only twenty people a day are issued a permit, and I was one of the lucky ones along with Bert, allowed to visit this amazing natural monument.
