Antelope Canyon is one of the most popular locations in Arizona and attracts visitors from all over the world.
It is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation and was formed by the erosion of the Navajo sandstone by the action of water torrents through limestone and sandy soil, especially during the monsoon periods.
It consists of the upper and lower part of the canyon and it is assumed that this geological wonder is about 190 million years old.
Antelope Canyon is a sacred place of the Navajo people, and is part of the Navajo Tribal Parks which can be accessed only with permission. Guided tours are a must to provide you with extensive information on the history, geology and culture of the Antelope Canyon area. Light beams in the canyon rocks are not always visible. They usually appear during the summer and the best time to visit is between March and October. Although currently closed(Oct 2020) because of Covid 19, the Navajo usually offer regular tours, including a photography friendly tour throughout the year. This is one of those places where photography can be as spectacular as being there.
Visits to any slot canyon can be dangerous due to sudden floods caused by rain, sometime quite a distance away.
